Let's Talk About Sex: Ethically

Sexuality-related issues often enter the therapy room through conversations about intimacy, identity, relationships, sexual trauma, shame, religious or cultural messaging, consensual non-monogamy, gender identity, boundaries, and client values. Yet many clinicians receive limited formal training on how to respond to these topics with confidence, clinical clarity, and ethical grounding. This 3.0-hour ethics training is designed to help mental health professionals navigate sexuality-related content in therapy while remaining within their scope of practice and honoring professional ethical responsibilities. Participants will explore common ethical considerations related to informed consent, competence, documentation, confidentiality, cultural humility, client self-determination, referral decisions, and therapist values or bias.

The course will also address how clinicians can recognize when additional consultation, supervision, training, or referral may be appropriate, while still responding to clients in a respectful, non-shaming, and clinically supportive manner. Special attention will be given to maintaining appropriate therapeutic boundaries and documenting sensitive sexuality-related information in ways that are clinically necessary, ethical, and mindful of client safety. By the end of the training, participants will have a practical framework for approaching sexuality-related conversations ethically and compassionately, reducing avoidance or overreaction, and supporting clients with greater confidence and professionalism.

(Trainer: Elizabeth Reed, LCSW, LISW-S, LICSW earned her undergraduate degree from West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia, in 1996, followed by a Master of Social Work from West Virginia University in 2000. She has clinical experience working in residential, outpatient, and intensive outpatient settings and has served as a clinical supervisor since 2005. She has also maintained a private practice since 2014.

Growing up in rural Appalachia during the Gen X era, she saw firsthand how mental health struggles were often met with shame, misunderstanding, or the belief that asking for help meant something was wrong. She also witnessed the mistreatment of queer individuals and the ways marginalized communities were often pushed further to the edges.

These experiences shaped her strong commitment to fairness, social justice, and creating spaces where people feel understood and supported. Her passion for helping others eventually led her to pursue psychology and social work as a way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Her own experiences have also shaped the way she approaches her work. Like many women and AFAB individuals, she was not recognized as having ADHD during childhood because she did not fit the traditional stereotype of hyperactivity. Instead, she was the bright, daydreamy, anxious child who worked hard to keep everything together. Receiving diagnoses of ADHD and anxiety in adulthood helped her better understand herself and approach life with greater compassion, curiosity, and self-acceptance.

Today, she brings her professional experience, lived experience, empathy, and social justice perspective into her work. Her passion is helping others who have felt misunderstood, judged, or as though they do not fit into systems that were not designed with them in mind. She strives to help people find greater relief, connection, understanding, and self-acceptance.)

Understanding Uncoupling: Supporting Clients Through Relationship Endings

This workshop is designed for therapists who work with couples or individuals going through separation or the end of a relationship. Ending a relationship is more than just deciding to part ways — it can bring strong emotions, stress, confusion, and major life changes. Clients may struggle with communication, parenting concerns, identity shifts, or learning how to move forward.

This training focuses on practical, real-world ways therapists can support clients during this transition. Participants will explore how to guide respectful conversations, help clients manage difficult emotions, set healthy boundaries, and make thoughtful decisions about their next steps. The workshop also looks at how separation affects children, families, and social support systems.

Through discussion, examples, and hands-on activities, therapists will gain tools they can use immediately in sessions to support healing, clarity, and growth after a relationship ends.
